Writing and Creativity

How does creativity find us?  It does if you let it. My story, Trees, The Guardians of the Soul was given to me. I had been overseas many years and returned to Australia to visit Mom. Being on a smallholding in gum infested Tasmania, I did not bother to close the curtains when I went to bed about 11 pm. I must have fallen asleep quickly – but  something woke me up. I did not gradually wake up because I was hot, or needed to pee – something woke me!

Anyway, I sat up in bed and looked out of the window. It was a bright night, and there, on a moon-illuminated tree hung the story.  If you look at the cover of the book Trees, (on this blog) you will see the image that I was given, along with the story. It was not a lineal story process, like when watching a movie or reading a book – it was an immediate understanding.

Looking at the clock, it was around 3 am.  I got out of bed, sat cross-legged on the floor and wrote the story in long hand.  This took about half an hour.

This story (Trees), is a fairy tale and probably most loved by my readers. Kids also love it.

As a writing coach, I teach the ‘Spirituality of writing’ (I will give extracts from How to Write – Right in future postings on this), and although I was not surprised as to how this story, or the many others came about, I delight in the process.

And you, please share any fascinating creative processes that have happened to you.

  2. I read Trees The Guardians of The Soul, from that day onwards I look at trees using a spiritual lens and I respect them more now.
